History and Terroir

In the run-up to the 1997 harvest, Jean-Hubert DELON took ownership of Château Nénin, which had been in the hands of his cousins, the DESPUJOL family, since 1847. With the acquisition came a comprehensive revitalization effort. Vines were pruned and trellised anew, the terroir received improved drainage, and some vines were re-planted or removed. Modern equipment was integrated into the winemaking process. The aging and storage cellars were completely refurbished, expanded, and climate-controlled. To complete the impressive transformation, a state-of-the-art vat room was built, equipped with the latest technology.

Farming and Winemaking

The vineyard of Château Nénin extends as one continuous piece of land, except for a single parcel. Nevertheless, only the finest parcels covering 8 hectares of the greatest argilo-gravelly terroirs on the Pomerol plateau are dedicated to producing the Grand Vin. The adjoining parcels below are devoted to the production of the second wine, La Fugue de Nénin. As a result, its terroir encompasses the full diversity of soils that characterize Pomerol, mainly composed of Oligocene deposits covered with alluvial gravel formations from the Dordogne, including siliceous clays and gravels, quartz, granites, ironstone, and basalt pebbles. The vines of Château Nénin are planted on the Pomerol plateau.
