Philippe Guigal

History and Terroir
Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, the Guigal estate has become one of the most lauded domaines in the Rhône Valley. Based in Ampuis, a quaint village located in the heart of Côte-Rôtie, this renowned winery is best known for their single-vineyard bottlings from the appellation, including La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque. Today, Guigal is spearheaded by the family’s third generation, Philippe, who works as the estate’s oenologist. The business operates both as a domaine and a négociant, meaning that wines are produced from both estate-grown and purchased fruit.
Farming and Winemaking
Of Guigal’s 45 hectares, of which around half are rooted in Côte-Rôtie, the estate’s holdings span some of the Rhône’s most coveted appellations, including Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and Hermitage; however, the domaine is best known for its role in putting the single vineyard sites of Côte-Rôtie on the map. In the cellar, traditional vinification techniques are used. All fermentations are done with native yeasts, minimal intervention is used, and all wines are bottled without fining or filtration. The estate’s top wines age for multiple years in barrels prior to release. Additionally, the family established their own cooperage within the Château d’Ampuis area in 2003, so as to further expand their knowledge of barrel making.
