History and Terroir
Vega Sicilia, founded in the 1860s, is the undisputed legend of Spanish winemaking and a benchmark estate in Ribera del Duero. Widely recognized as Spain’s most iconic wine producer, Vega Sicilia revealed Tempranillo's immense potential to craft structured, long-lived wines. The estate first stunned the world in 1929 when its 1917 and 1918 vintages earned top honors at the World’s Fair. Since 1982, under the stewardship of the Álvarez family, Vega Sicilia has continued to set the highest standards for Spanish wines. While officially certified organic in 2023, its vineyards have been farmed without chemicals for over three decades, reflecting a deep commitment to sustainability.
Farming and Winemaking
With 210 hectares of vines planted to Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, Vega Sicilia dedicates 140 of these hectares to crafting its flagship wines, Valbuena and Único. The estate is celebrated for producing singular, ageworthy wines that undergo extensive aging before release. The legendary Único cuvée, for instance, is aged for more than 10 years, offering an unparalleled experience of depth and complexity.
