History and Terroir

Situated in the village of Auxey-Duresses, Domaine Lafouge’s regional roots date back to the 17th century, though it wasn’t until 1830 that the family began acquiring vines around Burgundy. Today, the estate is spearheaded by fifth generation winemaker Gilles Lafouge, who has quickly risen to the ranks as one of the best vignerons in the Côte de Beaune. After studying winemaking and working numerous internships, Gilles returned home to work alongside his father in 1987. They officially founded their eponymous estate, Domaine Lafouge, in 1995.

Farming and Winemaking

The domaine comprises 10 hectares of vineyards across a number of prestigious growing areas, including Auxey-Duresses, Meursault, and Pommard. All vines are sustainably farmed with a focus on nature respectfully principles, and no insecticides are sprayed. During harvest, all fruit is picked by hand. The greatest, hardest and most meaningful part of the work is carried on in the vineyards, as the quality of the grapes is trusted to be the fundamental element to craft prestigious wines. Contrary to the often rustic associations with wines from Auxey-Duresses, Lafouge bottlings are known for their juiciness, bright acidity, and pure fruit character. While drinking beautifully now, these bottles promise to age beautifully for at least a decade in the cellar. As prices for Burgundy continue to climb, these understated wines continue to overdeliver in terms of quality-to-price ratio.
