Cupano
Lionel and Ornella Cousin

History and Terroir
Cupano is an organic and biodynamic estate located in the southwest corner of Montalcino, Tuscany. Founded in 2000 by the late Lionel Cousin, a Frenchman with a passion for wine, and his partner, Ornella Tondini, Cupano has deep ties to the region. Lionel and Ornella settled in Montalcino in the 1990s, gaining valuable experience at Frescobaldi’s Il Giardinello estate. Cousin, mentored by the legendary Burgundy winemaker Henri Jayer, incorporated Jayer's philosophies into Cupano’s winemaking, giving their wines a distinctive edge that sets them apart from traditional Tuscan producers.
Farming and Winemaking
Cupano’s 6.4 hectares of vines are planted to Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, nestled in mineral-rich, well-draining soils. The estate practices biodynamic farming, respecting the natural rhythms of the land. Winemaking is minimalistic and traditional: fermentation is carried out with native yeasts, the wines undergo extended lees aging, and there is no fining or filtration. This hands-off approach allows the terroir to shine through, creating wines that are both rich and fresh, with layers of sweet spice and velvety tannins.
