Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona
Famiglia Bianchini

History and Terroir
Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona is based in the Castelnuovo dell'Abate village in southeastern Montalcino, and the estate’s origins date back to the 17th century. However, the Ciacci family history with the estate began in 1877, when Francesco Ciacci purchased the establishment - previously owned by the Bishop of Montalcino and Abbot of Sant’Antimo Abbey - from the countess Eva Bernini Cerretani. Upon the marriage of Elda Ciacci and Alberto Piccolomini d’Aragona in the mid-20th century, the property’s modern-day name was established. In 1985, the estate was passed on to Giuseppe Bianchini, a farmer of the estate for a long time. Bianchini was employed by the Countess Ciacci Piccolomini herself; with no heirs to the fortune, she willed the property on to her trusty employee. Giuseppe’s love for Brunello—coupled with the property’s optimal growing conditions—pushed him to morph the estate into a wine-focused property.
Farming and Winemaking
Since his passing in 2004, Giuseppe’s children, Paolo and Lucia, have carried on their father’s dream of creating high-quality Brunello di Montalcino. This brother-sister duo farms all 55.5 hectares of vines organically, without any use of chemicals or herbicides. Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona’s vineyards benefit from well-draining soils and proximity to the Orcia River, which helps moderate the region’s climate. Paolo and Lucia work to keep yields low, so as to ensure that quality is never sacrificed for quantity. The use of cover crops is also implemented amongst the vines. In the cellar, Paolo and Lucia use a combination of cement and oak to vinify their traditionally-styled wines. While Sangiovese remains the backbone to all that the duo produces, small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah are also cultivated. In addition to their flagship Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino wines, the pair also vinifies as single-vineyard Brunello, a Riserva, a varietal Syrah, and an approachable IGT Rosso made from Sangiovese and international varieties. Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona wines are best known for their classic style, concentration, and sophistication. All wines are bottled with minimal SO2. The estate’s signature style is one of youthful approachability, though make no mistake – these bottles are certainly able to withstand aging in the cellar.
