Philipp Wittmann

History and Terroir
Philipp Wittmann is a Southern Rheinhessen estate with a rich history dating back to 1663. The current generation winemaker, Philipp Wittmann, is a progressive thinker who was named Germany's Winemaker of the Year in 2014. The estate's vineyards are cultivated in limestone soils on rolling hillsides, with 75% of the plantings dedicated to Riesling and 25% Burgundian varieties.
Farming and Winemaking
Wittmann has been practicing organic farming since 1990 and obtained official biodynamic certification in 2004. All fruit is harvested by hand, gently pressed, and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wines are then aged mainly in large, neutral oak vessels, with the percentage of time in wood casks depending on the specific cuvée. Wittmann's Rieslings are known for their balance, depth, and concentration, characterized by lively acids and persistent finishes. Top vintages can easily age for decades in the cellar.
