History and Terroir

Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein is a historic estate in the Mosel Valley, with roots dating back to 1520. At the moment the 15th generation is highly passionated about a more traditional concept of terroir, putting an impressive amount of work into understanding the underlying magic of their unique soils.

Farming and Winemaking

Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein's wines originate from steep, terraced historical vineyards. Their old, often ungrafted vines are planted in high density, and the low yields of 0.5 liters per vine allow for a perfect root-fruit relationship, essential to let through the “sound of slate.” As the winery works with eight different slate soils, they produce eight very distinct dry wines. The wines are fermented and aged in large fudres made from oak trees grown on the same slate soils. Fermentation occurs exclusively with wild yeasts, without any enzymes or finings, in a fertile energy field enriched by music and flowing water.
