Krug

History and Terroir
Founded in 1843 by Johann-Joseph Krug, Maison Krug was born from a singular vision: to craft Champagne of uncompromising quality, expressing richness and pleasure every year, regardless of climate. Originally from Mainz, Germany, Krug arrived in Champagne with experience at Jacquesson and a bold idea—to create Champagne that transcended vintage variations. In 1848, he captured his philosophy in a cherry-red leather notebook, emphasizing individuality, terroir, and blending wines from multiple vintages—a radical departure from tradition. Passed down through generations, the House grew under the leadership of Henri and Rémi Krug in the mid-20th century, who refined its winemaking vision and global prestige. In 1999, Krug joined the LVMH group but retained full control over its craft, producing only prestige cuvées. Today, Krug is celebrated worldwide for its legendary wines—Krug Grande Cuvée, Krug Rosé, Krug Vintage, Clos du Mesnil, and Clos d’Ambonnay—renowned for their complexity, layered character, and unmistakable style.
Farming and Winemaking
Krug’s winemaking blends time-honored craftsmanship with bold innovation, expressing Champagne’s full richness. A hallmark of Krug’s style is its use of small 205-liter oak barrels for primary fermentation—a rare practice today that deepens complexity and aging potential. For Krug Grande Cuvée, the House blends over 120 wines from more than 10 vintages, some aged up to 15 years. While a base year makes up about 50% of the blend, the final Champagne transcends any single harvest, maturing six to eight years on lees and further post-disgorgement to achieve remarkable finesse. Introduced in 1976, Krug Rosé follows a similar philosophy, blending white base wines with macerated Pinot Noir and uniquely including all three grape varieties across multiple years. Krug Vintage and Krug Collection capture standout years and cellared masterpieces, while Clos du Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay showcase pure single-vineyard expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, respectively. Together, these wines offer a rare combination of complexity, richness, and quiet refinement, embodying Krug’s timeless appeal.
