History and Terroir

Domaine du Clos Naudin’s roots in Vouvray run deep. Now spearheaded by third-generation Philippe Foreau, the domaine was founded by his grandfather back in 1923, with Philippe at the helm of the estate since 1983. The property comprises 11.5 hectares of organically-farmed vineyards, all of which are planted to Chenin Blanc. Today, Philippe is joined by his son, Vincent, who shares his father’s passion for meticulously crafted Chenin Blanc produced across a variety of styles.

Farming and Winemaking

All of Domaine du Clos Naudin’s vineyards are planted within the appellation of Vouvray and benefit from mid-slope locations and south-facing exposures. Vines average 45 years in age, and the majority of the domaine’s soils are flinty limestone clay and tuffeau chalk. Come harvest, all fruit is picked manually, and numerous passes are made in the vineyard. In the cellar, fruit is crushed with a pneumatic press and fermentation takes place in 300L barrels with native yeasts, approximately 95% of which are used. The wines ferment for approximately two months, with malolactic fermentation never occurring due to the naturally high acidity found in the juice. For the demi-sec and sweet wines, the family never practices chaptalization, and thus, these prestigious cuvées are only made during the best years. Domaine du Clos Naudin wines are known for their complexity, rich-yet-balanced flavor profiles, and unbelievable ability to withstand long bouts of aging in the cellar.
