Domaine Georges Vernay
Christine Vernay

History and Terroir
Domaine Georges Vernay has been a benchmark estate in Condrieu since its founding in 1937. Established by Francis Vernay, the estate played an imperative role in the official recognition of the Condrieu appellation, which took place just three years after the estate was created. Following in Francis’ footsteps, his son Georges played an integral part in establishing the boundaries of the appellation, which are still recognized today. (This is why Georges was often referred to as the ‘Pope of Condrieu’ until his passing in 2017 at the age of 92!) In continuing the pioneering legacy of the domaine, Georges’ daughter, Christine Vernay, took the reins at the estate in 1996.
Farming and Winemaking
Under her oversight, the property’s wines have soared to new heights—and many have garnered 100-point scores from some of the industry’s top critics. In the vineyard, Christine farms all of the estate’s wines using organic principles. In the cellar, all fermentations are done with native yeasts. Fruit for most of the majority of the reds is destemmed, and élevage takes place for 12-24 months in barrel depending on the cuvée. In addition to their signature Viognier-based wines in Condrieu, Domaine Vernay crafts a number of Syrah-based reds within the Côte-Rôtie appellation. Vernay whites are known for their freshness, full body, and beautiful fruit character, while the reds are regarded for their elegance, smooth tannins, and impressive ability to age for long periods in the cellar.
