Il Marroneto

History and Terroir

Based in the heart of Montalcino, Il Marroneto is one of the most historic and influential wineries in all of Tuscany. Although the family’s regional roots date back to 1246, the winery’s modern day story begins with Giuseppe Mori, who created the brand in 1974. His sons Alessandro and Andrea planted the first vineyard the following year, and upon his first taste of winemaking, Alessandro was hooked. Alessandro immediately left his full-time career as a lawyer and transitioned to a life of viticulture and vinification, transforming a great passion into a philosophy of life. Over the next decade, the estate expanded by acquiring various plots of vines across the Montalcino region.

Farming and Winemaking

Over the next decade, the estate expanded by acquiring various plots of vines across the Montalcino region. Today, the majority of the family’s holdings are cultivated at over 400 meters above sea level and are rooted in a mixture of sand, limestone, and galestro soils. Due to the vineyards’ staggering altitudes, Il Marroneto’s fruit is able to maintain elegance, high levels of acidity, and develop highly perfumed aromatics.

I see grapes as the end of the work. In the cellar I try to carefully protect what the land has given them.
